driftless living...

So...whats this 'a driftless life' thing, you ask.  Well...when you live in one of the oldest places on the planet, a certain lifestyle is required.  Hunter, gatherer...fisher.  Living with the land is the norm...Deer, turkey, grouse, and trout, are a mainstay of driftless living.  Yes, we have fiber optics and are now hooked up...although cell phone reception is still questionable, but 20 years ago that wasn't the case.  No tv no nothing but a land line....except the deer, turkey, grouse, and trout.  It still is the driving force for living here.  Now, its not that hard to catch and release deer...selective harvest is the rule and its not uncommon to watch lots of deer without killing anything.  And, with sometimes 3 to 5 thousand trout per mile...few find anything wrong with a trout dinner on occasion
.  Its that land ethic...Organic Valley has marketed it well.  S&S Cycle is just over the ridge, too.  Major employers in the kickapoo valley...but, many more live close to the land.  Making a dollar here and there, working a job part time...and that land thing.  Ginseng, morel mushrooms, and the ever more abundant cannabis are supplementing incomes.  As does guiding trout anglers...everyone does it.  Some for free and some like a corporation...but, I'll save that for another rant.  A driftless life...
